12.44.1
The pious Shaykh Shams al-Dīn ibn Tāj al-ʿĀrifīn lived in the city of Kūl, devoted to worship, a man of great standing. The Sultan entered the city of Kūl and sent for him, but he did not come to him. So the Sultan went to him, but when he drew near his dwelling he turned back and did not see him.
12.44.2
It happened after that that one of the amīrs rebelled against the Sultan in a certain region and the people swore allegiance to him. It was reported to the Sultan that this amīr had been mentioned in Shaykh Shams al-Dīn's assembly and that he had praised him and said: "He is fit for kingship." So the Sultan sent one of the amīrs to the shaykh, who fettered him and fettered his sons, and fettered the qāḍī of Kūl and its muḥtasib, because it was said that the two of them had been present at the assembly in which the shaykh had praised the rebel amīr. He ordered them all imprisoned, after he had put out the eyes of the qāḍī and the eyes of the muḥtasib! The shaykh died in prison! The qāḍī and the muḥtasib used to go out with some of the jailers and beg from people, then be returned to prison. It had reached the Sultan that the shaykh's sons used to mix with the Hindu infidels and their rebels and keep company with them. When their father died, he brought them out of prison and said to them: "Do not go back to what you used to do!" They said to him: "And what did we do?" He was enraged at that and ordered them all killed! So they were killed. Then he summoned the said qāḍī and said: "Tell me who held the views of these men who have been killed and did as they did!" He dictated the names of many men from among the leading people of the town. When what he had dictated was presented to the Sultan, he said: "This man wants to ruin the town! Strike off his head!" So his head was struck off, may God Most High have mercy on him.
