13.38.1
When Sayyid Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Awharī set out on his journey, he had left with me one thousand and sixty tankas, and I had spent them. When I returned to Dihlī I found that he had assigned that money to Khudhāwandzāda Qawām al-Dīn, who had come as deputy for the vizier. I was ashamed to tell him, "I have spent the money," so I gave him about a third of it and stayed at home for some days.
13.38.2
It was rumoured that I had fallen ill, and Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Khwārazmī, the Ṣadr al-Jahān, came to visit me. When he saw me he said, "I see no illness in you." I said, "I am sick at heart!" He said to me, "Tell me about it!" I said to him, "Send me your deputy, the Shaykh al-Islām, and I will tell him about it." He sent him to me and I informed him, and he went back and informed him, and he sent me a thousand dīnārs in dirhams; he had already had another thousand owing from me before that. Then he asked me for the rest of the money. I said to myself, "Nobody can rescue me from him except this Ṣadr al-Jahān, because he is very rich." So I sent him a saddled horse whose saddle was worth one thousand six hundred dīnārs, a second horse which with its saddle was worth eight hundred dīnārs, two mules worth one thousand two hundred dīnārs, a silver quiver, and two swords whose scabbards were overlaid with silver, and I said to him, "Assess the value of all this and send it to me." He took it and set a value of three thousand dīnārs on the whole, sent me a thousand and kept back two thousand. I was upset and fell ill with fever, and I said to myself, "If I complain of him to the vizier I shall be disgraced." So I took five horses, two slave girls and two mamlūks and sent them all to Malik Mughīth al-Dīn Muḥammad, son of the Malik al-Mulūk ʿImād al-Dīn al-Simnānī, who was a young man. He sent it all back to me, sent me two hundred tankas and apologised, and I was freed of that debt. How great the difference between one Muḥammad and the other!
