This Shaykh Ibrāhīm had come to this city and settled outside it; he brought dead land there into cultivation and began growing melons on it, which turned out extremely sweet, with none like them in that land; people grew melons in the neighbouring land, but they were not like his. He used to feed the poor and the needy. When the Sultan set out for the land of al-Maʿbar, this shaykh presented him with melons; he accepted them, found them delicious, and granted him the city of Ẓahār as a fief, ordering him to build a zāwiya on a hill overlooking it. He built it in the finest manner and used to feed all comers and goers there. He continued thus for years, then came to the Sultan and brought him thirteen lakhs, saying: 'This is the surplus of what I used to feed the people, and the treasury has more right to it.' He took it from him, but the Sultan did not like what he had done, because he had amassed money and not spent all of it on providing food! In this city the son of the sister of the vizier Khwāja Jahān plotted to assassinate his uncle, seize his wealth, and go over to the rebel in the land of al-Maʿbar. News of it reached his uncle, who arrested him and a number of amīrs and sent them to the Sultan. He killed the amīrs and sent the nephew back to him, and the vizier killed him.
