13.62.1

We embarked on a ship belonging to the said Ibrāhīm called al-Jākar — with a after j and the hard k — and put in it seventy of the gift horses; the rest, together with our companions' horses, we put in a ship belonging to the said Ibrāhīm's brother called Manūrat — with a after m, n, long ū, r without vowel and dotted t. Jālansī gave us a ship in which we put the horses of Ẓahīr al-Dīn and Sunbul and their companions, supplied us with water, provisions and fodder, and sent his son in a ship called al-ʿUkayrī — with u after the undotted ʿ, a after k, y without vowel, and r — which resembles a ghurāb but is broader, with sixty oars; it is roofed over during battle so that neither arrows nor stones can reach the rowers. I myself sailed in al-Jākar, which carried fifty archers and fifty Abyssinian fighting men; these are the masters of this sea, and if one of them is aboard a ship, the Indian pirates and infidels keep clear of it.

13.62.2

After two days we reached the island of Bayram — its name spelt with a after the one-dotted b, y without vowel and a after r. It is uninhabited and lies four miles from the mainland. We landed there and drew water from a cistern on it. The reason for its ruin is that the Muslims entered it against the infidels, and it was never inhabited again! The Malik al-Tujjār mentioned earlier had wanted to resettle it; he built its wall, set up mangonels on it and settled some Muslims there.

13.62.3

Then we travelled on from it and on the second day reached the city of Qūqa — with u after the first q and a after the second — a large city with great markets. We anchored four miles from it because of

the ebb tide. I went down into a launch with some of my companions at low tide to go into it, but the launch stuck in the mud with about a mile still between us and the town. When we got down into the mud I leaned on two of my companions, and people frightened me that the flood tide would come before I reached it, and I cannot swim well. Then I reached it and went round its markets. I saw there a mosque attributed to al-Khaḍir and Ilyās, peace be upon them, where I prayed the sunset prayer, and I found in it a group of Ḥaydarī faqīrs with a shaykh of theirs. Then I returned to the ship.
