Opposite the congregational mosque I saw a green, smooth tree whose leaves resemble fig leaves except that they are soft, with a wall enclosing it, and beside it a miḥrāb in which I prayed two rakʿas. They call this tree darakht al-shahāda — darakht with a on the undotted d and the r, kh without vowel, and the two-dotted t. I was told there that when autumn comes each year, a single leaf falls from this tree after its colour has turned first yellow, then red, and on it is written by the pen of divine power "There is no god but God; Muḥammad is the Messenger of God." The jurist Ḥusayn and a number of trustworthy people told me that they had seen this leaf with their own eyes and read what was written on it. He told me that when the days of its falling come, trustworthy Muslims and infidels sit beneath it, and when it falls the Muslims take half of it and half is placed in the treasury of the infidel sultan, and they use it to seek healing for the sick.
