فقلت له: قريب من هذه الصورة حديث إبراهيم بن هلال الصابي [119 أ] وذلك أن رسولا لسيف الدولة كان قدم مدينة السلام، فطلب شيئا من شعره على لسان صاحبه، فدافعه إلى أن أزف ارتحاله، وأتاه عند الوداع ملحا عليه في تنجزه، فأعطاه عجالة الوقت قوله:

I said to him: Close to this case is the story of Ibrāhīm ibn Hilāl al-Ṣābī. [119a] An envoy of Sayf al-Dawla had come to the City of Peace and asked him, on his master's behalf, for some of his poetry. He put him off until his departure drew near, and at the farewell the envoy came to him pressing him to fulfil it, so he gave him, on the spur of the moment, these words:
