Mention was made earlier, at the beginning of this book, of the Amīr Khalaf ibn Aḥmad, in connection with what the Rightly-Guided Manṣūr ibn Nūḥ saw fit to do in restoring him to his house and giving him the upper hand over his adversary, until the meteors of discord came crashing down upon Khurāsān; the preoccupation of its governors with the calamities that befell them from it left him free to rest and settle at ease, and to strengthen himself with the various kinds of revenue that the land of Sijistān yielded him, until the compass of his ambition widened to seek superfluities and to contend with the stallions and champions.
