Before girding himself for battle, Bughrājuq had taken cups [whose potency had lulled the eye of reason to sleep and quickly clouded his hope, so that] the eyes of thrust and blow might be roused by them. Two fires, of wine and of valour, combined against him, until through them he neglected the safeguard of readiness and forgot the insight of caution and vigilance; he risked himself in pursuing his foe, deluded by the fancy of his drunkenness, and was aware of nothing until Ṭāhir ibn Khalaf wheeled upon him with a blow that struck him dead on the spot. At once someone dismounted to him and cut off the head from between the neck-veins. Rout then overtook both sides alike, so that [the slayer could not be told from the slain, nor] the victor from the vanquished, nor the despoiler from the despoiled—except Ibn Khalaf, who followed in the tracks of his broken troops with those who brought them back to his quarters.
