Meanwhile there reached him word of Khalaf ibn Aḥmad's correspondence with Ilek Khān, sharpening his edge and inciting him to make war on him, in hope of [gaining] Bust and its districts, and Ghazna and what lies around it. [110b] To this were added reports and stinging remarks that flashed toward him from [Khalaf's] side concerning the affair of Abū ʿAlī: his professing regret for having helped him against [Abū ʿAlī], and his declaring openly before witnesses, by way of insinuation, that the destruction of kings is ill-omened, that the violation of noble houses is base, and a well-known weakness of judgement.
