In the year four hundred the Sultan Yamīn al-Dawla wa-Amīn al-Milla set out eagerly on a raid into the lands of Hind, to reopen with it the wound of his earlier blows there, seeking nearness to God Most High and hoping for reward from Him, Mighty and Glorious. He advanced towards it, urging on the horses and crossing rugged ground and plains, until he reached the heart of the lands of Hind. He plundered them and humbled their proud, overturned their idols and put their barbarians to the sword. He proceeded at his ease towards his goal and fell upon the greatest of the infidels in an encounter through which God [174b] bestowed upon him his wealth and granted him his horses and elephants as spoils. He let the swords of his men rule over them, mowing them down on every plain and upland and slaughtering them at every descent and ascent; and God brought him back with them to Ghazna with the abundant spoils he had gathered, safe and laden with booty, prosperous and victorious.
