The slave-girl calumniates the prince
the era of your justice and the days of your equity such excess should occur? [Far be it that your noble essence, which
is the source of effusion and blessings, should commit an action that could bring about censure,]
for successful sovereigns can have no disposition more abominable than undertaking such matters,
since, in accordance with [the dictum] 'The sultan is the shadow of God on earth, with whom every
oppressed person finds refuge,' the threshold of sovereigns—whose court, resembling the two stars of al-Farqadān, is the kiss-station of lips and the dust of prostration for the foreheads
of all people—has ever striven to protect the servants of the Court of Almighty Glory, exalted be His majesty, to the utmost degree,
and with gracious attention has wiped the rust of sorrow and grief from the minds of the subjects,
and Muslims have thereby rested in the cradle of safety and ease, whereas acting contrary to that
would be an injustice.] The king asked, 'What is the cause of this injustice, and who is committing this wrong?'
The slave-girl said: 'When I took the prince to my chamber, and in a tone of gentleness
and in the manner of motherly affection said to him, "O fruit of the tree of royalty, and O pearl in the oyster shell
of empire, what is the reason for this silence? Why does the parrot of your utterance not enter the meadow of speech?
And for what reason does the nightingale of your tongue sing no tune upon the rosebush of words?" it turned out
just as they have said: "He was silent for a thousand [moments] and spoke absurdity." He said, "The cause of my silence is an incurable pain
and endless separation from you, for the hand of love has placed the lock of silence and the seal of muteness upon my mouth;
and love: what has barred the tongues from speaking? And it was a fortunate coincidence that
the king sent me to your chamber today, and it has been said: 'Prosperity is fortunate coincidences.' Know that your love
is blended with my water and clay, and the flame of love for you has caught hold of my heart and soul:
