and pleasing character, and he shall enjoy a life upon the throne of the realm and cushion of sovereignty like Farīdūn and Jamshīd.
He shall bring the world under the regulation of administration and the guardianship of punishment,
and shall surpass the kings of the face of the earth in knowledge, wisdom, generosity, honor, noble morals, and hereditary virtues.
Yet, after several years of his life have passed, there shall be a mortal danger to his life;
but through the grace of the Creator and the favor of the sovereign, that event shall be made easy
and that predicament shall find remedy. Prosperity and victory shall attend him, and triumph and success shall be his companions;
no dust shall settle upon the pages of his perfection, nor shall he suffer any calamity.”
Then they brought a wet-nurse of upright constitution, balanced temperament, gentle nature, and noble character,
and entrusted the prince to her so that she nurtured him in the gentle breezes of south and north winds. And the prince gained strength,
and when the number of his years reached twelve,
the king sent him to a tutor to learn education and royal manners. But over the course of ten years
he learned nothing of the categories of knowledge and no progress became evident. For that reason the shah
became vexed and distressed, and gave orders to summon the philosophers and convened an assembly,
and said to them by way of consultation and seeking guidance: “Kings cannot do without knowing the prerequisites
of leadership, understanding the requirements of punishment, the effusion of virtue, the extension of justice, sound thinking, efficacious counsel,
