The doorway of the sanctum was another centre of attraction. In the early Gupta temple the doorway served as an elegant outer frame to give a proper setting to the image installed inside. This is particularly noticeable in case of the Gupta Vishnu temple at Devagarh. The same tradition was kept up right into the medieval architecture and some of our temple doorways are models of good carving combined with a wealth of symbolical details.
