The study of symbols is not only fascinating, but also essential for a clear appraisal of the significance of Indian art motifs. The Pūrṇa-Kumbha (Full Vase), Kalpavriksha (Wish Fulfilling Tree), Kāmadhenu (Cow of Plenty), Svastika, Chakra, Sūrya, Nāga-Garuḍa and the Daivāsuram are some of the great motifs that have been clearly formulated in the Vedas, and throughout our art history they serve as the vehicles of thought and of decoration. They constitute the basic vocabulary of Indian art and literature.
