SARNATH LION-CAPITAL :—This is the famous monument in which Aśokan art has reached its highest perfection. It is a sculpture of monumental planning, rich in composition, of rare harmony in the execution of its lateral and vertical parts. Its elements conceived singly to face four directions and as an integrated whole, show the highest skill of the sculptor's art. Its lines of composition in segments and diagonals and verticals appear to have been conceived and controlled by a great master with rare assurance and with clarity and self-confidence. Its greatest virtue lies in the meaning imported to its symbolism with which we will deal later.
