JĀTAKA SCENES :—The Jātaka is a birth story in the previous life of the Buddha. These were extremely popular and included a number of folk tales. Later on under Mahāyānic inspiration some of them were elaborated as *Avadāna* stories of great length. The Jātakas are represented at Bharhut, Sanchi, Mathura, Gandhara and Amaravati.
