Termez on the north bank of the Oxus was an important outpost of Graeco-Buddhist art where French and Russian delegations have come across much valuable material which adds a new page to the history of Gandhara art during the first two cent. of the Christian era. Here a Buddhist temple was found which has been assigned to the 1st cent. A. D., and is of the same type as the Stūpas in Gandhara. At secondary sites near Termez were found fragments of statuettes of Bodhisattvas, human figures of horse-riders wearing northern dress, a very fine piece of the base of a column, and fragments of pottery and vases of glazed earth.
