Chapter IV (a), Vedic Arts and Crafts, is based largely on references in the Vedic mantras and other literature to a variety of *śilpas* and also the architectural details of house-building, dress and ornaments. Full use has been made of the material in the two *Śalā-sūktas* of the Atharvaveda (AV. 3-12, 9-3).
