For example, from the female figures on the Stūpa railings at Bharhut, Bodhgaya and Mathura, to the female figures of the exterior of the Koṇārka Sun temple may seem to be a far cry, but a close study reveals their evolution from the motif of the garden-sports (Udyāna-krīḍā) and water-sports (Salila-krīḍā), which have a literary background from Pāṇini and the Jātakas up to Hemachandra and even later.
