The geese pattern was very favourite with the calico-printers of ancient India. In the *Kādambarī* (7th century) 37 white *dhotī* decorated with the geese pattern is mentioned. 38 In a communication to M. Pfister, 39 who discovered a printed calico piece from Fustāt, Dr. Coomaraswamy was inclined to give this pattern a northern or Gujarāt origin.
