The *Avaśyakachūrṇi*¹³, while discussing the various constituents of a *sūtra*, i.e., *bhāṣā*, ‘definition’, *vibhāṣā*, ‘option’, and *vārttā* ‘annotation’, cites the example of painting. When on the wall the right proportion of a figure is obtained it is then called *bhāṣā* or definition of painting; when its various limbs are defined then the *vibhāṣā* stage is reached and when the eyes, etc., are painted then the *vārttā* or annotation stage is reached.
