∗ The word ‘vaḍu’ (vaḍuvo) I have translated ‘builders,’ as it means something much more than a mere carpenter, and yet not an ‘architect’ who only designs and does no work himself. The various uses of the word are explained in Chapter III. † The whole of this procedure is related in the very beautiful Bhadda Sāla Jataka, quoted above; see also Davy, ‘Travels in Ceylon,’ 1821, p. 171, and ‘Service Tenures Commission,’ 1872, p. 461, and p. 38 of this book.
