I have examined a riyan-lella (‘cubit-rule’), now in the possession of Goḍapola Galaḍḍā, a descendant of the Dēvēndra Mulācariyā already mentioned, to whom it once belonged. It is an iron rod, rectangular in section and exactly 31 (English) inches long. One side is divided into 24 angal (each equal to 1 7/24 English inches), the other into divisions measuring respectively 3 7/8, 2 1/2, 1 7/24, 3 1/48, and 3/8 inches respectively. These measurements are those in ordinary use amongst craftsmen; various special units are described in Chapter VIII.*
