One of the most important mediæval cities, though somewhat earlier than the period dealt with in this volume, was Yāpahuva,[*] above referred to. Founded about A.D. 1225, it remained the capital until 1288, when the seat of Government was transferred to Polonnaruva. In spite of this early date, I have mentioned the city because of the beautiful stone window from the palace which can now be seen in the Colombo Museum, and in order to quote from the Yāpahuva Vistaraya, the interesting though doubtless exaggerated legendary account of its foundation.
