The golden age of Indian art and literature, when India was most herself, I conceive to have been the period dating from the time of the Upanishads and of Buddha, to the close of the fifth and sixth centuries A.D. The civilisation of this time found its ultimate literary expression in the Rāmāyaṇa (about 300 A.D.) and the Mahābhārata (about 400 A.D.) and is in popular tradition centred round the court of Vikramāditya (about 375 A.D.).
