Fa Hian (A.D. 400) states that on a certain occasion during his visit, both sides of a procession road were decorated with representations of Buddha in the five hundred bodily forms which he assumed in his different births before the last; “these figures are all beautifully painted in divers colours, and have a very life-like appearance”*; no doubt they were made of imperament materials somewhat similar to those used in *bali* ceremonies.
