The Mahāvamsa speaks of a park made at Polonnaruva by Parākrama Bāhu (A.D. 1164-1197), which was railed “with pillars decorated with rows of images made of ivory,” of which the ivory-railed palanquin of Pl. IX. reminds us in a smaller way. Parākrama Bāhu also built in the ‘Island Park,’ a pavilion named Sāmīmaṇḍapa ‘wrought with ivory.’
