It will be observed that gems are used not only in actual jewellery, but also in the decoration of copper, silver and gold plate (Pls. XLII., 2, 3, and 5, XLIIIA, 1), the handle of a staff (Pl. XXIII., 4), and even on furniture or on a door-leaf or jamb. The effects produced are decorative and harmonious.
