The goldsmiths usually made careful designs or working drawings, intended for the approval of the king or other patron. But in many cases the forms of jewellery were so constant, and varied so little, that it would be quite sufficient to order them by name only; this applies, for example, to the various chains named after flowers or fruits, to the different kinds of bracelets, ear-rings, etc. Finger rings, pendants, jewelled canes, and the like might differ more; on Pls. XX.
