“The potters of the first division attend on duty in Kandy during one month at the *Maha Gabaḍāva*, and are then relieved by those of the second division, who serve one month more. During this period they are obliged to furnish as many earthen vessels (*valan*) as are required for the *Maha Gabaḍāva*, and to make tiles and bricks and perform any other potter’s work required for the king’s service. At their departure from duty each division supplies one hundred earthen vessels to the Disāva’s house.
