The conditions of labour affect not merely the producer, but also the consumer, who under modern conditions must put up with the lack of temperament in the mechanical work composing his environment; and must suffer economically also, inasmuch as work in which the worker is not interested, or of which he cannot be proud, generally costs the consumer more in the long run than the initial cheapness saves.
