PLATE XXIX. LOOMS AND WOVEN CLOTHS.
1. Loom, seen from the position occupied by the weaver. Observe the pattern faintly shown in the warp threads, resulting from the insertions of numerous thin rods to preserve the ‘sheds’ for use when required. See p. 234.
2. Near view of loom on the right side, showing a row of bo-leaves just started.
3. Kapu kapana yantraya, cotton ginning machine.
4. Part of an eṭirila, with elaborate plait designs, birds and cobras. Collection of the Hon. J. P. Lewis.
5. Eṭirila from Talaɡuṇe, typical designs. Author’s collection.
6. Gahōniya, belonging to the Tiboṭuvave Maha Nāyaka of Malvatte. Length 31 inches.
7. Paṭiya, belt, belonging to the Tiboṭuvave Maha Nāyaka of Malvatte. Measures 75 × 8 1/4 inches. The centre is plain, the two ends alike. The colours are black, red, pink, blue-green and yellow. This unique specimen is said to have been made in Ūva. The patterns are of especial interest: note especially serial repetition (animal processions), affrontment, knop and flower, intermittirende Wellenranke, calyx volute, and fret motifs.
8. Detail of a gahōniya flounce. Gilimale. Bo-leaf design.
