Two distinguished foreigners visited Ceylon early in the fifth century. The first of these was the learned Brahman Buddhaghosa, who came to Ceylon from Northern India about A.D. 400, to consult and copy the commentaries on the Tripiṭaka or Buddhist canon. He further composed new commentaries, which are still regarded as authoritative. His influence led to what may be called a Buddhist revival.
