The great Mahāvaṃsa chronicle was compiled in the reign of King Dhatusēna (A.D. 461-479). Both the Dīpavaṃsa and the Mahāvaṃsa are based on the historical material contained in the Sinhalese Aṭṭhakathās, no longer extant, and on legends and traditions amongst the people. It is really an epic work with Duṭṭha Gāmaṇi for its hero. It covers the period 543-301 B.C. Continuations were added at various times, a final supplement bringing the record up to the British occupation of Kandy in 1815.
