Professor Geiger says, “There is hardly a corner of the Indian continent of whose history we know so much as we do of that of the island of Ceylon.”* He here refers to the history recorded in two Pali chronicles, the Dipavamsa and Mahāvamsa, written in the 4th and 5th centuries A.D., respectively, and the latter from time to time added to, and continued up to the time of the British occupation of the Kandyan Provinces in 1815. There are also other verse chronicles and historical ballads of various dates.
