About this time ten native merchants who were British subjects were barbarously treated by the king, and seven died as a result; this was made the chief pretext for an invasion of Kandy by the British in 1815. Unsupported by his ill-used subjects, Vikrama Simha was easily overcome and captured, after which the Sinhalese voluntarily surrendered the Government to the British, but with full reservation of their rights and liberties.
