The two distributed all their wealth, and set out for the forest in a chariot. Very soon two Brahmans appeared and begged for the horses, which were given at once; but Sakra sent four dēvas in the shape of horses to draw it. However, another Brahman soon asked for the chariot, and it also was given, after which they were forced to proceed on foot. At last they reached Vaṅgiriya, where Viśvakarma had, by command of Sakra, prepared for them two pansal, one for Vessantara, the other for Madrī Dēvī and the children. Here they led an ascetic life for seven months.
