The less philosophical Buddhists no doubt believe in the real material conflict thus represented; for others it is merely a symbol. As such it is most suggestive. The serenity of the seated figure is powerfully contrasted with the vain efforts of the loathsome and horrible devils around; the devotion of the Earth Goddess is the crowning touch.
