The following five precepts (pan-sil) are binding on the laity in general: not to destroy life, not to steal, to refrain from adultery, falsehood, and intoxicants. Three other precepts are observed on special occasions: not to eat at unseasonable hours, to abstain from dancing, singing, music and unbecoming shows, and from the use of garlands, scents, perfumes, cosmetics, ointments, and ornaments, to abstain from the use of high and broad beds, and from sexual intercourse of any kind.
