*Penalties* We gather an idea of the reasons and manner of punishment of craftsmen from an incident *for bad work* connected with the building of the parapet of the Kandy lake, about A.D. 1806; although the work was carried out as *rajakariya* by ordinary villagers, and was not (except as regards the design), done by the craftsmen themselves. One Gannoruve Ṭikiri Gammahe of Gannoruva had charge of part of the work, which was allotted to his people, and those of Parakaṭavela Āracci. When the king came to inspect the work, the gammahe’s part was still unfinished, but the rest completed. He was taken to prison by the *kaṅkānama* (overseer) of the Veḍakārayō people, and his certificate of office forfeited. He was eighteen days in prison, but ‘got released,’ after which other adventures befel him.
