v2.c19.604

**The bride.** The shy bride (*mugdhā*, *navoḍhā*, or *navala bālā*) is led by the messenger (*dūtikā*) across the starlit courtyard to the door of her lover’s house, where a servant with torch and scent-spray (*attar-dān*) awaits her. The *dūtikā* supports and embraces the timid ‘babe’, and there shines here clearly the same tenderness which characterizes the Vaiṣṇava erotic poetry. The treatment of the cast shadow suggests Mughal influence.
