¹ An important piece of evidence given by Hsüen Tsang proves what might in any case have been inferred, the existence of *Śilpa-śāstras* in the late Gupta period: he mentions five *Vidyās* or *Śāstras*, of which the second is the *Śilpasthānavidyā* (Beal, I, p. 78).
