The *Vandals* were the next of these nations who invaded the Roman Empire. In the year 406, they crossed the Rhine, and ravaged the provinces of Gaul. They then passed into Spain, and established a kingdom in that country. In the year 429, they crossed into Africa, and conquered the Roman province of that name. They then established a powerful kingdom in Africa, and made themselves masters of the Mediterranean Sea. The *Vandals* were a cruel and ferocious people, and they destroyed many of the monuments of Roman civilization.
