When this style first received attention it was, for want of more definite knowledge on the subject, accepted as a distinct and separate style having an origin of its own which had not been traced; but, after an examination of scores of examples of different periods, and, consequently, a much closer familiarity with the style, it has not been difficult to follow it back to its beginnings in the older Dravidian or Pallava temples of the south. In other words the Chālukyan is but an outgrowth of the earlier Dravidian style, so modified in its development by western temple builders as to have eventually attained a separate style in their hands. The different steps in the transition from the purely Dravidian of the seventh and eighth centuries are easily traced.²
