But as concerns string measurements by the monochord, the late Mr. A. J. Ellis, F.R.S., in a most exhaustive paper read before the Society of Arts,¹³ notices the above table of the Râjah's and remarks: "These divisions are made on the supposition that the vibrations are inversely as the length of the strings, which all my observations and experiments show is not the case on any practical instrument."
