¹ Both the varieties of sub-towns thrown out by a principal town, viz, the Dāmaḍa and the Vāhirikā, were also known as Śākhā-nagara (literally branch-town). The Śavdakalpadruma gives the following definition of this subsidiary town: “The town which is constructed in the vicinity or the outskirts of the main city, to accommodate its overflow population, is termed branch-town (Śākhā-nagara) from analogy with the branch of a tree.”
