¹ Arthaśāstra, Bk. II, Ch. I. Re the boundary, the original text is कोशद्विक्रोशसीमान्; it may be interpreted in two ways: either as refering to the boundary of a village being extended to one or two kroś or the distance between the boundaries of the neighbouring villages being one or two kroś. The latter interpretation is more probable, though Dr. Śāstry translates it in the former sense.
