c8.11

³ Every one of the four main classes of forts is subdivided by Kauṭilya into two varieties. Dr. Shastry misses this point and his rendering of the whole passage is vitiated by this defect. Thus his translation does not make it clear that there are two species of desert-fort, ‘nirudakastamva’ and ‘iriṇa’. His translation of the next sentence is also faulty in the similar way. *Vide infra*, p. 78.
