v2.c24.s8.26

dated in A.D. 1085, we learn that, late in the 11th century the Jains had the place in possession. But it is also plain that they were reconstructing it of materials from older Hindû structures. And the absence of débris suggests that either the walls and great spire never were constructed or that, at a later date, the entire materials were carefully removed. How long before the 11th century the eight sandstone pillars were first carved we are left without evidence to determine; but there seems no reason for ascribing them to an earlier period than the commencement of the 10th century, and possibly they may be of even somewhat later date.
