(²) *Divyâvadâna*, XII and BURNOUF, *Introduction à l'hist. du Bouddh. indien*, pp. 162 sqq. The XIIIth story of the *Avadânakalpalatâ*, deplorably edited indeed in the *Bibl. Indica*, V, 1895 (see, below, p. 174, n. 5), adds, in accordance with the usual custom of Kshemendra, nothing but poetic graces; ROCKHILL (*Life of the Buddha*, pp. 79-80, following the Dulva) and SCHIEFNER (*Eine tibet. Lebensbeschr. Çâkyamuni's*, p. 293) restrict themselves to a reference to BURNOUF. For the connections of these various authors with the tradition of the Mûla-Sarvâstivâdins see also the very clear conclusions of Prof. S. LÉVI, *Journal Asiatique*, July-August 1908, pp. 102 and 104.
